Camping Dessert – Campfire Churros

Chef Jason Hill of www.CookingSessions.com learns how to make an easy camping dessert — an easy churro recipe dubbed Kern River Crusties — in this episode of “Chef Tips.” Like many camping dessert recipes, these campfire churros should be supervised by an adult, especially when heating the butter. To make this easy churros recipe you'll need 1 package of prepared biscuit dough, a mixture of 1 tablespoon cinnamon and 1 cup sugar, and 1 stick of butter. To begin, grab a bit of dough (about 2 biscuits) and roll it into a ball or skinny snake-like shape. Place the biscuit on a campfire roaster or twist it around the roaster. Roast over the campfire and remove when browned and cooked through. Be careful not to burn. In the meantime, heat 1-2 tablespoons of butter in a pan over the campfire. Remove the cooked dough and dip in melted butter, followed by the cinnamon-sugar mix. Toss well to coat in a Tupperware or Ziploc bag. I first learned how to make this easy recipe for apple fries while working at a French restaurant in Los Angeles. It is so simple and easy to do. 1 Granny Smith apple, cored, peeled and sliced 1/2 cup cornstarch, or as needed DIPPING SAUCE 1/4 cup whipped cream cheese 1/4 cup marshmellow cream Dash of pumpkin pie spice Whisk sauce ingredients until creamy. Core, peel, and slice your apple. Coat apples well with corn starch. Shake off excess corn starch in a strainer and fry in a deep fryer set at 375 for about 3 minutes or until golden brown. Sprinkle with a mixture of cinnamon and sugar, which has been premixed. Chef Tip: You can use your favorite apple in this recipe. I also like to omit the cinnamon and sugar and serve plain apple fries with my favorite pork dish.
